License Control

iShareRadio includes license control to help keep remote operation inside the band / mode / power privileges for the operator's license, taking into account where the transmitter (radio) is physically located.

This feature runs automatically during normal use (connecting to radios, operating under marketplace or club bookings), as long as your profile and device location data are complete.

What it does for you

  • Band plan enforcement: the hub determines what frequency ranges you may transmit on for the current operating scenario.
  • Mode-aware limits: band plan entries can be restricted to a signal mode (for example CW, SSB, FM, or ALL).
  • Power limits: band plan entries include a maximum transmit power (watts) for that band segment and license class.
  • Cross-country license equivalency: when the operator and transmitter are in different countries, the platform maps your license class to an equivalent license class in the transmitter's country before selecting the applicable band plan.
  • Offer-aware restrictions: when you operate under an active offer/booking, the hub can further restrict allowed bands and power using the offering's configured limits (on top of your legal privileges).

During connect, the hub blocks radio operation if license control inputs are incomplete or band-plan data is unavailable for the scenario.

What you need to set up (end user)

License control uses your active (default) callsign and the radio device's country/location.

On your profile — callsigns

Add or edit callsigns under your user profile. The hub uses the default callsign you select (radio button in the callsign table):

  • Callsign — required
  • Country (country_code, 2-letter ISO such as US, CA, GB) — required before connect
  • License class (operator_class) — required before connect; dropdown options are country-specific (the hub loads valid classes for the selected country)

You may store up to a few callsigns per account; only the active one drives license control for operation.

Callsign add/edit is manual entry by default. An optional refresh from registry on edit may be available in the UI—it does not run automatically when you save a callsign.

On the radio — transmitter location

The transmitter country comes from the radio device's location data (GeoIP and/or user-reported location on the device). If the hub cannot determine where the radio is located, license control cannot compute privileges for that device and Connect may be disabled.

How it behaves in common situations

  • Operating a radio in your home country: your license class is applied directly to that country's band plan.
  • Operating a radio in another country: your license class is mapped through the hub's license equivalence tables to an equivalent class in the transmitter's country, then that country's band plan is applied.
  • Operating under an offer/booking: the final allowed band segments can be narrowed by the offer's restrictions (for example, a narrower band segment or lower power cap than your license alone would allow).

If something is missing or misconfigured

License control is strict about required inputs. If the hub cannot compute privileges, Connect is disabled and you may see messages such as:

  • Add a callsign — no active callsign on your account
  • Country required on callsign — your active callsign has no country
  • License class required on callsign — your active callsign has no operator class
  • Radio location unavailable — the device has no usable country/location data
  • No band plan / equivalence data — the hub has no tables for that country or license combination (contact support if this persists)

Complete your active callsign (country + license class) and verify the radio device location before retrying.

What "license control" is (and isn't)

  • It is: an automated way for iShareRadio to determine and enforce band/mode/power boundaries based on your stated license on your active callsign and the transmitter's country.
  • It isn't: a substitute for your responsibility as the operator. You are responsible for ensuring your profile license information is accurate and that your operation complies with applicable regulations.
